Welcome children, youth, adults, and seniors! You can progress in Speed Skating at your own rate to suit your interests as they evolve. Many members have previous hockey / figure skating experience when they join, but it is not necessary.
Some members simply enjoy the fitness opportunities that our bi-weekly practices provide, but there is always “Fun on the Edge”!
Speed skating is a fairly technical sport but almost anyone with basic skating skills can become quite good at it in a short time with our experienced coaches. All ages welcome! We have members from as young as 7 to over 70 and even have children and parents skating in the club together. There are certain basic skating abilities that are necessary to safely participate effectively in the introductory program:
- Glide on one foot
- Stop on a whistle from full speed in 5 meters
- Speed from standing start complete one lap
Regardless of your experience, you will find it takes a little time to adapt to speed skates, high speeds, and learn racing strategies.
Girls and boys of different ages train together and often race together to ensure equal opportunity. Improvements in personal best times in races are as important as winning or finishing position. This is consistent with the Long Term Athlete Development Model created by Sport Canada and adopted and adapted by Speed Skating Canada for use by clubs across the country.
We are proud of our positive sport environment!
