December 24th update

Hello fellow HRSSC families,
Just a reminder that there is no short track speed skating at SMC this week

However after some weather delays the Halifax Oval is set to open this week, and I want to share some more information regarding our Long Track program and skating opportunities at this fantastic facility for the upcoming season.
**The Oval has tucked in a Speed Skating/Public Skate period tomorrow morning, Tuesday 24 December from 7-9:30am.   While not a fully coached session, some skaters are excited to get out for a Christmas Eve skate from 8-9:30am and Jonathan can join us until 8:40am.  Please come join along if you want to give the Oval a try and kick off your season.**  More times this week below.
Your HRSSC full year or winter membership includes coached sessions during the week and the opportunity to try out some introductory racing on select Sunday mornings plus a couple of weekend competitions (with additional registration and fees).   All good fun, part of a great community of skaters, and outdoors in the fine wintery chill and sunshine.   The Oval is a 400 metre track and offers our skaters a unique chance to skate on the only official long track oval east of Quebec.
Our coached sessions, are Wednesdays and Fridays 5-6pm and Saturdays 9-10am.   Thanks in advance to our great coaches Jonathan, Cassidy, and Luke for working together to support our upcoming long track speed skating season.   We will also welcoming back one of our long time coaches, Carolyn Jarock – CJ.   Our coaches are working hard to get out to the Oval as much as possible around their work and school schedules.  Thank You!!
At the introductory level, our skaters wear the same skates for both short track and long track practices, but it is recommended that they are sharpened a little more often as the ice on the Oval tends to dull skates a little quicker.   The same safety gear is required along with a warm, thermal layer and often a jacket and neck gator/buff during warm up – although generally weather and skater dependent.
